As us tech dwebs know (and it seems sometimes that only us tech dwebs know this) it's relatively simple -- as time goes by -- to replace: consumables, digitial printing, equipment, and even ctp devices.

But database-centric prepress systems? Maybe not so easy.

So with Kodak heading down, down, to Chapter 11 and possibly liquidation in the sometime future, what is going to happen to the prepress system that is driving the majority of the world's offset printers' workflow?

Well, notso easy to figure out. First of all, from what I know, the various Prinergy teams are based in Vancouver (a shadow of its former self), Herzlia, Israel (staffing numbers unknown) and some parts of Asia (I heard Vietnam but what do I know? Probably wrong.)

There are former Prinergy developers working in Vancouver with most of the software development management team over at Copperleaf, with the notable exception of Dave Kauffman who is working with Tantalus.

As it stands now, I can't see any of them jumping back into the Prinergy fold to save it, as the heavy hand of Rochester is still gently guiding the product lineup of the old Creo gently down the flusher. Perhaps if the software division gets spun off, some might be persuaded to have a sniff as consultants. Of course, the code base of Prinergy now resides in Israel, so not so easy to figure out the communication issues around THAT issue.

Interesting to see, the irresistible force of Kodak mismanagement against the immovable object of the Oracle database of Prinergy that is at the heart of so many prepress systems across the world.

Interesting to watch as an observer. Not so interesting if you are participant in the drama.

iPhone Photography: CreativeLive Day 1 Highlights

How do you sum up an entire day of learning about iPhone photography? I am not going to reiterate everything you can learn within the class downloads, but I’ll try and highlight some of the days events that I found most interesting. Following the iPhoneography instameet the day before, I was game for meeting the other in-class students, the CreativeLive crew, and seeing what else Jack had on his iPhone.

Jack Hollingsworth Loves iPhone Photography

Is iPhoneography contagious or is it Jack’s love for iPhone photography that’s contagious? I don’t know but I could feel the intensity of Jack’s love for the topic and for the breakout art form and method of photography. Jack is one of those multiplier type people. What I mean is that he makes you feel energized one the subject and leaves you feeling like you are capable of going out and creating amazing work.

Since the class, I’ve been thinking so much about life in photography. Jack is a perfect example that following what you love will not do you wrong. In fact, his love of photography has lead him to a fascination with a mobile phone as a camera. Most professionals with 30 years experience won’t accept this tech with such embrace. Embracing change or first exploring this changing field has set him on such a prosperous path that is now paying dividends.

I could never even question Jack’s love for iPhone photography. This was such a highlight for me on Day 1. Instead of learning from a jaded photography veteran, we were learning from the iPhoneography Love Doctor. When his iPhoneography products are readily available, I say scoop them up.

iPhone Photography is Not An Attack on the DSLR

This class wasn’t set out to get us all to sell our DSLR units and join an iPhoneography cult. Traditional photography is not something we see being killed by the iPhone, but we were optimistically looking at where mobile photography is going in our lives as photographers or in general. I can’t help but to be left with the same feeling you’d get if you looked back to early 2000′s with Digital vs Film. Earlier digital adopters dealt with less than optimal image quality and the same has happened with mobile photography in the last few years. Learning how many images were taken with a smartphone in 2011 lends to say something big will happen in 2012.

If you have the downloads, you’ll actually get to see that Jack practices what he preaches too. We were witness to some video clips during the class that showed Jack out shooting with his iPhone 4 and DSLR. I have a feeling most of you photographers can relate to this if you’ve got an iPhone. Perhaps many photographers shot film and digital much the same in the past too – I wonder how many actually developed the film if they started capturing images with both mediums.

The question I have relates to convergence. When, or will, we ever opt to not bother with the bigger and bulkier DSLR… When do we full cross the line, if there is a line. For professional photographers, commercial work is usually were the line exists and I loved (yea, I mean LOVED) that Jack brought discussion around “low barrier to consumer entry but high barrier to commercial success.”

Watching a few short videos of Jack shooting iPhone photography with a model was brutally inspiring to me. I can’t even begin to scratch the surface on my thoughts here. This is very cool, very real, and very possible, and something I’m going to explore when the time is right. I believe there is opportunity to explore this with clients open to creative expression.

LUNCH

CreativeLive treats you well. When watching live, you don’t realize that there is some serious good eats happening off camera. Lunch for the first day was Thai food and it was awesome. We ate and talked about how Star has more followers on Google+ than there are people in my city of London Ontario. We have something like 350, 000 people in London…mmmhmmm…. Not even Chase has the follower count of Star Rush! BOOM!

Special Guests

Looking back at Day 1, I seriously didn’t realize how much actually did go on. I have a healthy love for mobile photography, but I am still hugely clueless to everything that’s going on out in the world with respects to iPhone Photography, iPhoneography and the likes. My eyes were opened to a whole culture of sites, people, and things going on.

I had no idea about The Mobile Photo Awards. Did you? Clearly thousands of people did because there were that many submissions of mobile photography! I learned about this website and project at the workshop and then from the creator of the project: Daniel Burman. Once you’re done reading this go check out the Mobile Photo Awards site!

The Winners had already been announced for the contest but it was amazing to hear about the response to the call for entries, Dans story, and to later see the winning entries. The highlight came in knowing that other people are using mobile photography ( mainly iPhone photography) in massively artistic ways. Dan talked about his 25 hours of “apping” to create an outstanding work of art. I had not heard this term before, but I instantly related it to any other art form today – ie painting, sculpting, ect.

Now that the MPA blog site is up, I am sure to visit it everyday. Why? Even though the winners have already been announced, everyday Dan is sharing one submission each day on the blog. If you want to up your game in iPhone photography, keep going back to the MPA blog.

The skype interview was pretty funny and worth it if you’re considering the downloads!

iPhone Mini Shoot

I almost forgot the coolest part where we actually created some iPhoneography. That’s not a criticism at all either. We shoot constantly with our iPhones. While it would have been awesome to have a day to full shooting and engagement in practicing the art, it wasn’t something possible with the setup. I think this would be more geared towards an off camera type workshop. Hmmm!

Anyways, we spend a few minutes outside CreativeLive taking pictures of Mackenzie ( I hope I spelled that right) and then it turned into a weird free for all. By the way this was probably the only sunny day in Seattle for days. Here are some of the shots from my iPhone of our good looking model:

Bullish for iPhone Photography and Creativity

I’m continually reminded that no matter who you are, how old you are, how experienced you are, that you can easily shoot iPhone photography. There is something electric about iPhoneography. There is a story building and we are all right in the middle of it or we might even be at the forefront. The creative and photographic freedom we’re given to shoot, process, and share within minutes is something to be so excited about. This goes beyond just the use for photographers by trade and into the lives of everyone. Everyone is a photographer. Everyone has the ability to be more creative. We have the ability to build a more creative world and that gives me so much hope. That gives me so much to look forward to every single day.

Steve Jobs, 1955-2011

We wrote about Steve Jobs’ impact on design and his collaboration with design legend Paul Rand on the NeXT brand. Little did we know he would pass away a few short days later at the age of 56.

9/11 ten years later

2011 marked the ten year anniversary of the September 11 attacks. On this day, we took at look at one design firm’s approach to commemorate the events of 9/11.

Being imperfect is part of being human. Even though an idea or a concept may be flawless, but its execution will always be full of mistakes. Similar is the case with graphic designers, who strive for perfection but seldom achieve it in their endeavors. But the truth is…if you don’t make mistakes, how are you going to gain experience? In the words of Oscar Wilde:

“Experience is the name every one gives to their mistakes.”

Particularly when you start as a newbie designer, the horrors of graphic design are uncountable. But as you progress in the field and experience the practical side, you learn from your mistakes. Here’s a look at some common mistakes that designers tend to make:

1. Deviate from Target:

You must have come across a website that is extremely attractive in appearance and look, but fails to highlight the product or service in focus. No matter how fantastic the appearance is, it will deviate from the point if it does not accurately emphasize the entity. Even in identity development, there are some logo designs that look outstanding from the outside, but fail to hit the target audience because of lack of substance. Consider the example of the identity below which was designed for Burnley City. At first instance, you might be amazed at the vividness of this logo, but with no particular meaning within, it deviates from the core purpose.

2. Creative Overdose:

"Excess generally causes reaction, and produces a change in the opposite direction." These were the words of the great philosopher Plato on the use of excess in everything. You must also have come across various designs and artworks that are flamboyant and creative, but just aren’t effective. This is because excess of everything creates a mess. Similar is the case with creativity. Sometimes, graphic designers make a mistake of indulging in creative overdose. In the process of showing off, they end up adding too many elements and spoil the beauty of the design. Even though you explained the core purpose of the design, it creates confusion and irritates the audience.

3. Working for Self Interest:

If you think that work should look good in your portfolio rather than for the client, it is time to re-think. These types of selfish designers seldom make an impact on their clients and don’t last in the long-run. When you design just for the sake of building your portfolio, you fail to fulfill the client brief in the right way. You must not sacrifice the success of client’s business just for the reason that your graphic design portfolio should look impressive.

4. Over-reliance on Inspiration:

In most graphic design endeavors, designers frequently seek inspiration to come up with concepts. This can be accomplished through various online resources, design books or discussions with others in the creative circle. Sometimes, designers are exposed to so many elements that it generates a bundle of dissimilar contradictory concepts. This happens when you rely overly on inspirational sources to generate concepts rather than use your own creative instincts. It also dampens your originality and ability to work independently.

5. Gaining Negative Publicity:

The job of a graphic designer is to perceive the facts of their clients and convert it into a meaningful visual representation. This can be accomplished when you accurately follow the design brief provided by the client. One of the biggest horrors for a graphic designer is to gain negative publicity for his work. Take into consideration the London 2012 Olympics Logo. Designed by Wolff Olins, this logo caught the attention of the world for all the wrong reasons. Because of its inappropriate references to several taboo subjects, it was highly criticized on the blogosphere.

No profession in the world is devoid of risks and fears of failure. You must be ready to face the shocks and setbacks that come in your way. Instead of crying over spilled milk, you should take lessons from your mistakes and prepare for future challenges.

What do you do with your old books? We mostly see them in libraries, garage sale and more. Nevertheless old books tend to get dirty, useless and dusty. But this artist originally coming from Montreal, Qc of Canada, founded another way to give a new life to these old books. His name is Guy Laramee and his collection of breathtaking landscapes from old books.

Guy Laramée is an interdisciplinary artist who, in the course of his 30 years of practice, found his way through such varied and numerous disciplines as : stage writing, stage directing, contemporary music writing, musical instrument design and building, singing, video, scenography, sculpture, installation, painting and literature. He received more than 30 grants and was awarded by the Canada Council for the Arts the Joseph S. Stauffer award for musical composition. His work has been seen and heard in Canada, United States, Belgium, France, Germany, Switzerland, Japan and Latin America.

Your hand is permanently stuck in the shape of a mouse

I can’t decide which was more fun this week: making the truffles or corresponding with Eric “Johnny” Battles, chocolatier and founder of Sweeteeth in North Charleston, South Carolina. I was so curious when Johnny offered a series of flavors, none of which I had ever considered pairing with chocolate. As luck would have it, Grace, Amy and I all chose the same three flavors from Johnny’s list, and that’s what we’re bringing to you this week, a trio of truffles: Rosemary and Vanilla Bean, Star Anise and Rose-Peppercorn, and Toasted Coriander Truffles. I thought featuring something easy and unique that could function as a gift would be great. An assortment of truffles is what my husband plans to give his family members . . . if he doesn’t eat them all first. I plan to do my own experimenting using Johnny’s base recipe. If you make these or experiment with your own flavor combinations, let us know! — Kristina

About Sweeteeth: Sweeteeth was started in 2008 by Eric “Johnny” Battles, a tattooed Alabama boy and self-taught chocolatier. Johnny began experimenting with chocolate while working at EVO Pizza in North Charleston, SC. His bon-bons soon appeared on the dessert menu and quickly became a hit. It wasn’t long before other shops started carrying Johnny’s chocolates, so he decided to dedicate all his efforts to his craft, which is making mouths across the country happy. Imagine if you could just take a nap and learn something in the process (and not just how good sleeping feels). Kind of like passing out with your head in a textbook but then NOT failing the shit out of the test the next day. Well scientists are exploring the possibility through the use of MRI machines. But not just learning boring-ass information, learning HOW TO DO THINGS. *karate chops through a stack of cinderblocks*

Here's how it works: you pick a task that requires high performance from your visual cortex, like catching a ball. Then, you go find someone who's a pro at catching a ball, stick them in an fMRI machine, and record what's going on in their brain while they visualize catching a ball. Now you've got your ball-catching program, and you're ready to learn. Next step: put yourself into the fMRI machine, and rig it to induce that pro ball-catching imagery that you recorded earlier in your brain using neurofeedback. You don't even have to be paying attention while this is going on. Your brain, though, becomes familiar with that pattern, which is what learning is: your brain becoming familiar with patterns. Play that pattern back enough, and you will get better at whatever activity the pattern is associated with. This isn't just conjecture: the researchers involved have shown that this fMRI pattern playback can in fact "cause long-lasting improvement in tasks that require visual performance... In theory, a type of automated learning is a potential outcome.

Video Inspiration is a weekly(ish) post where we either feature a specific artist or show a sort of "best of" list of videos we've discovered during the week. Everything here may not be brand new, but we felt it worth sharing with the community. Sooo, this week I decided to try something a bit different. I wanted to post a lot more videos under several different sub-headings in the hopes that if one type of video isn't your cup of tea, then another one will be. And if your problem is you just can't get enough great video inspiration, then you'll be in heaven :) These are my favorite finds from this last week. Enjoy!

L’imprimante jet d’encre Epson de 64 pouces peut être dotée d’une option d’impression à fond perdu. Epson a mis au point une trousse d’adaptation à l’imprimante jet d’encre grand format à bobine Epson Stylus Pro GS6000, permettant aux utilisateurs d’imprimer sans bordure. Il s’agit d’une première pour les applications grand format utilisant une encre à écosolvants. La trousse est offerte comme une mise à niveau pour les imprimantes GS6000 existantes et en option pour les nouveaux achats. La nouvelle version présente entre autres une fonctionnalité de Refonte de montage encore plus intelligente, des accès rapides aux bibliothèques d’objets et de modèles, de nouvelles options pour les marques et pour l’automatisation, ainsi que des fichiers de travail uniques. La fonction de Refonte de montage de DynaStrip 7 utilise les avancées de l’application pour offrir aux opérateurs des comportements plus dynamiques pour les objets d’imposition et les marques. Par exemple, les feuilles peuvent être redimensionnées à volonté, tout en conservant la même position relative du cahier au centre ou à la prise en pince. Here's some background from an official Adobe Blog post: HTML5 is now universally supported on major mobile devices, in some cases exclusively. This makes HTML5 the best solution for creating and deploying content in the browser across mobile platforms. We are excited about this, and will continue our work with key players in the HTML community, including Google, Apple, Microsoft and RIM, to drive HTML5 innovation they can use to advance their mobile browsers. Our future work with Flash on mobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores. We will no longer continue to develop Flash Player in the browser to work with new mobile device configurations (chipset, browser, OS version, etc.) following the upcoming release of Flash Player 11.1 for Android and BlackBerry PlayBook. We will of course continue to provide critical bug fixes and security updates for existing device configurations. L’ATFFEQ (Association technique des flexographes et fabricants d’emballages du Québec) sera officiellement lancée le jeudi 17 novembre. L’ATFFEQ a pour objectif d’offrir des services au quotidien, de favoriser le réseautage et d’organiser des rencontres et des conférences. La possibilité de devenir membres est offerte tant aux entreprises qu’aux individus des secteurs flexographie et emballage. Le cocktail d’inauguration de cette Association aura lieu à la suite d’une conférence flexo qui se déroule durant la journée du 17 novembre à l’Institut des communications du Québec. On y présentera entre autres l’état des lieux, l’avenir de l’imprimé, particulièrement de l’imprimé électronique, des encres, du papier recyclé, de la gravure laser et de la formation. Une présentation spéciale de Thierry Varlet, de France Emballage, Breizpack, France, traitera des thèmes environnementaux liés à l’emballage. Une table ronde réunissant des acteurs de l’industrie clôturera la journée. I noted earlier that the color of light is an important part of our perception of light quality. The color of light is measured on the Kelvin scale as temperature. Perceptually warmer colors (those toward the red end of the spectrum) have a lower color temperature than perceptually cooler colors (those colors that are bluer) which have a higher color temperature. For more on the color of light, see pages 34–39. It’s important for photographers to be able to differentiate between different colors on the spectrum, because the rendition of color has a huge impact on the final appearance of a photo. The color in your photo will primarily be rendered according to the color temperature of the lighting and the white balance settings applied to that lighting. Most digital cameras have a built-in color spectrometer, which is what sets the color temperature when you leave White Balance on Auto. If you think you know better than your camera (which can often be the case) you can set the White Balance, either to a Preset such as Daylight or to a specific Kelvin temperature. We must admit we're getting into the point where tradicional techniques and digital techniques start to blend. I mean, just take a look at the pieces o Roid, one of the MSK crew writers, he's galactic and geometrical style remind us a lot of retro futuristic digital art. Yet, he's not doing this on computer, but on walls.

    - L'évènement professionnel constitue l'élément déclencheur de l'action
      Il doit y avoir un évènement, pas que des tâches. Une situation où se déroule l'action
    - L'action constitue l'élément perceptible de la manifestation d'une compétence professionnelle.
      Lorsqu'on organise les apprentissages. On détermine la séquence des actions Détermine les façons de faire ou les concepts trouvent leurs utilités
    - Les contextes doivent permettre d'avoir accès aux ressources et de fournir le sens et la pertinence aux évènements et aux actions
      L'apprenant doit développer son autonomie et adhérer à la formation. Il faut mettre en place des contextes d'apprentissage. Il se retrouve sous la forme d'environnement où on vient placer ressource didactique, ressources matérielles et ressources pédagogiques qui seront utilisés pour expliciter ses actions. Tout cela à l'aide du langage est des concepts. Le contexte doit donner accès à ces différentes ressources et fournir aux apprenants le sens et la pertinence. Ex. : Environnement Garage qui fonctionne comme dans un vrai de garage.
    - L'attitude professionnelle constitue un élément essentiel de la manifestation du développement de la compétence professionnelle.
      Ce n'est pas qu'une classe, lab, ou atelier. Il y a aussi la manière que l'on effectue la formation Il faut que l'apprenant s'approprie les bonnes attitudes. Il faut qu'il y ait place pour les attitudes dans les contextes élaborés.
La compétence professionnelle et ses niveaux

  Concept important à comprendre avant d'élaborer des scénarios d'enseignement Car il influence l'orientation des scénarios d'enseignement L'approche par compétence a été instaurée en 1986
- Environnements d'apprentissage
  Il faut mettre des environnements d'apprentissage qui favorisent le développement d'une compétence professionnelle. Elle est au-delà du développement d'habileté ou de la simple acquisition de connaissance.
- Composantes du développement d'une compétence professionnelle
  - Contexte
    Ensemble de circonstances où se situent les rapports entre les individus, les personnes qui oeuvrent avec lui, son environnement de travail, et ses tâches professionnelles.
    - Sens
      Donne un sens à la compétence professionnelle.
    - Constituantes du contexte
      - Savoir
        Ensemble des informations, des concepts liés aux pratiques, aux tâches, aux situations, circonstances et évènements d'une profession. Ensemble des théories ou des notions que l'apprenant doit percevoir, acquérir, comprendre, traiter, pour être en mesure de réaliser les tâches professionnelles dans le contexte qui lui est proposé.
      - Savoir-Être
        Ensemble des qualités professionnelles, attitudes que manifeste une personne lors de la réalisation de ses tâches professionnelles. Le comportement de l'individu ou l'attitude qui manifestera est un élément clef.Rèegle générale on embauche des personnes sur leurs capacités, par contre on les remercie sur les attitudes qu'ils n'ont pas pu manifester lors de la réalisation de leurs tâches professionnelles dans des contextes particuliers.
      - Savoir-Faire
        Ensemble de pratique qui est composé de manoeuvres, de méthodes, de techniques, de procédures, de protocoles et d'instruction associés aux tâches selon les situations de travail.
    - Types d'apprenants aux jonctions des savoirs
      - Jonctions savoir et savoir-être (connaissants)
        Personne qui communique correctement les informations, sur la situation, les circonstances, les évènements et les pratiques professionnelles. Capable d'exprimer les informations, en mesure de maîtriser le vocabulaire de la fonction de travail, manifeste un niveau de connaissance important.

- La représentation
  La représentation devient une référence pour l'apprenant Percevoir l'information, donner du sens pour que lui même se construise sa propre représentation. La représentation consiste à traduire, à transcrire ou encore à coder l'information retenue dans une forme visuelle pertinente: il s'agit de construire un schéma graphique, une image, etc. adéquate par rapport à l'information qu'il faut communiquer ainsi qu'aux relations sous-jacentes. Il faut donc considérer chaque type de représentation visuelle (tableaux, schémas, organigramme, graphiques, cartes, plans, dessins figuratifs, photographies, etc.) comme une forme de communication spécifique, comme un langage possédant ses règles et son code. Il s'agit de formes d'expression relativement conventionnelles:

  Qu'il faut respecter si l'on veut garantir l'efficacité de la communication. Il faut en effet que le rédacteur possède:

    Le choix judicieux des variables visuelles est un des éléments qui contribue non seulement à la lisibilité du document, mais aussi à son intelligibilité. Les informations à transmettre peuvent appartenir à trois types généraux:

      Une nomenclature d'objets, d'idées, d'actions, etc.
    - Informations ordonnées
      Périodes, l'ordre chronologique, l'importance, etc.
    - Informations quantitatives
      Des mesures, des proportions, des quantités, etc. Or toutes les variables ne possèdent pas la même aptitude à exprimer les mêmes informations. La couleur ou la forme, par exemple, sont bien incapables de traduire des rapports quantitatifs alors qu'elles expriment parfaitement les différences. Définir le type d'information que vous désirez communiquer vous permet de choisir la variable visuelle la plus adéquate.
    - Type de variable visuelle
      - Forme
        Elle exprime relativement bien l'identité de l'objet à représenter et donc, par relation, les différences; qu'il s'agisse de pictogrammes ou de formes fondamentales (le carré, le cercle, etc.), leur lisibilité est souvent plus grande que celle des dessins réalistes.
      - Taille
        La variation de taille permet de traduire parfaitement les variations quantitatives.
      - Valeur
        La variation de valeur d'une couleur est une variation d'intensité lumineuse du plus sombre au plus claire, ou inversement; elle traduit une relation d'ordre et des différences relatives (relation quantitative)
      - Orientation
        Permets de positionner un signe par rapport aux deux axes du graphique; elle exprime les différences et gagne en efficacité en combinant les variables de grains et de valeur
      - Couleur
        Comme les formes, les couleurs traduisent des différences, mais ne peuvent cependant les ordonner entre elles, elles sont de plus chargées de signification culturelle et psychologique
      - Liens
        Permets d'associer les signes les uns par rapport aux autres; ils expriment la dynamique de l'action ou de la réflexion pouvant exister entre les signes

  - Simple
    Les dessins figuratifs et les illustrations sont plus lisibles s'ins sont simplifiés; les critères de pertinence ne sont pas le réalisme de la représentation, mais bien la reconnaissance de l'objet représenté. De ce point de vue un dessin est souvent plus efficace qu'une photographie qui, réaliste, ne permet pas de sélectionner l'information pertinente ; de même, une représentation est plus lisible en noir et blanc qu'en couleur sauf si celles-ci sont l'unique façon de représenter l'information pertinente.
  - Moindre coût
    Il faut toujours opter pour la représentation la plus économique et la plus simple ; la compréhension et la communication obéissent spontanément à la loi du moindre effort.
  - Effet proportionnel
    Les données doivent être traduites sous une forme visuelle dont les variations sont interprétables en fonction des valeurs propres des données : les "pointes de tarte" ou les histogrammes sont une bonne illustration de ce principe ; de même l'utilisation la variation d'intensité d'une même couleur pour traduire un phénomène progressif (plus le bleu est intense, plus la profondeur de l'eau est grande)
  - Monosémie
    Faire correspondre à chaque variable cognitive (élément d'information, données ou relation) une et une seule variable visuelle (couleur, forme, etc.): si dans une carte de géographie le bleu représente l'eau (les cours d'eau, la mer, l'océan, etc.), il ne faut plus utiliser cette couleur pour représenter un autre élément.
  - Association
    L'oeil associe spontanément les formes qui se ressemblent (association par similarité ou égalité) ou qui sont plus proches (association par proximité).
